The ‘Intelligent Steward’

Under its 3Business arm, Hutchison Telecommunications (Hong Kong) Limited (“HTHK”) is supporting HK Electric with the deployment of its 5G ‘Intelligent Steward’ robotic solutions. Providing round-the-clock inspection and surveillance of confined cable tunnels, the ‘‘Intelligent Steward’ will ensure a reliable electricity supply and safe power equipment.

Cable tunnels are an integral part of HK Electric’s power transmission and distribution network. However, most are confined spaces that pose risks and restrictions for inspection staff. The 3Business ‘Intelligent Steward’ robotic solutions help HK Electric convert its cable tunnels into “smart cable tunnels” and improve safety for entering staff.

The solution uses high-speed and low latency 5G technology to comprehensively patrol enclosed tunnel areas, enabling high-speed signals to reach the entire tunnel and make real-time transmission of high-definition images and data possible. With built-in cameras, as well as gas, humidity, and temperature sensors, the ‘Intelligent Steward’ can detect the tunnel environment, and inspect tunnel and cable conditions while collecting data. The robot can also be remotely operated via the wireless network and programmed to carry out automated tasks.

Jess Mak, HTHK Senior Vice President of Enterprise Market said, “The 3Business team is dedicated to providing corporate customers with one-stop 5G solutions, coupled with innovative services to drive digital transformation in different sectors. The ‘Intelligent Steward’ robotic solution was tailored to help make cable tunnel inspections at HK Electric more convenient and flexible. It also helps to ensure staff safety during inspections in an enclosed space, showcasing the scalability and possibility of 5G.”

The first ‘Intelligent Steward’ has been deployed by HK Electric and is fully authorised to station and work inside the tunnel. It’s being viewed as a successful example of the “Subsidy Scheme for Encouraging Early Deployment of 5G,” administered by the Office of the Communications Authority of the HKSAR Government.
